Before you decide between the 2022 Ford Edge and Mazda CX-5, you should take a closer look at each of these crossover SUVs. Our comparison guide is here to help you do exactly that.
Price: 2022 Mazda CX-5
As a small compact crossover, the CX-5 has a lower MSRP range, starting at $25,900 and ranging upwards of $38,650, depending on trim level and equipment. Meanwhile, the midsize Edge starts at $36,145, and the top-of-the-line Edge model starts at $44,945.
Sporty Performance: 2022 Ford Edge
Both Edge powertrains are stronger than anything the CX-5 has to offer.
- 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine (250 horsepower, 280 lb-ft of torque) + eight-speed automatic transmission
- 2.7L turbo V6 (335 hp, 380 lb-ft) + seven-speed automatic transmission
And all Edge models feature all-wheel drive, sporty performance gear designed for trail use and winter safety. With the Edge’s capable handling, powerful engines, and all-wheel drive, you’ll be swinging around sharp curves with startling ease. And the Edge also tows max loads of 3,500 pounds, an amount equal to a small boat or mini camper.
The smaller Mazda CX-5 also offers two engine options, a standard four-cylinder engine and an optional turbocharged version.
- 2.5L four-cylinder engine (187 hp, 186 lb-ft) + six-speed automatic
- 2.5L turbo four-cylinder engine (227 hp, 310 lb-ft or 256 hp, 320 lb-ft)
Note that the optional turbocharged engine delivers a stronger output when you fill the tank with 93 octane. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is optional. Although the CX-5 isn’t as powerful as the Edge, it still feels very dynamic, thanks to Mazda’s engaging steering and handling.
Passenger & Cargo Space: 2022 Ford Edge
Because the Edge is a midsize crossover, it offers more passenger space than the CX-5. In the front seats, you get a few extra inches of shoulder room and slightly more headroom. Compared to the CX-5, the Edge’s rear seats are also a few inches wider, providing a few extra inches for shoulders and hips.
If you’re a sporty driver — or just do a lot of shopping — the Edge is still the better option. Behind the rear seats, the Edge supplies 39.2 cubic feet for cargo items. The CX-5 has 30.8 cubic feet of cargo space, which is competitive for the compact crossover segment, but not competitive with the Edge.
Tech Gear: 2022 Ford Edge
Both crossovers will impress you with their standard safety gear. Features like forward collision mitigation and lane-keeping assist can act on your behalf, engaging the brakes or steering you back into the right lane automatically. A blind-spot monitor alerts you to vehicles you can’t see.
When it comes to infotainment, though, the Edge takes the reins. Ford’s midsize crossover comes standard with a 12-inch infotainment touchscreen (while the CX-5 gets a 10.25-inch central infotainment display). And the Edge’s SYNC 4 infotainment system also comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the CX-5 still retains the wired versions of this smartphone integration technology.
Choose Your New Crossover
The 2022 Mazda CX-5 is a sporty little crossover, but the 2022 Ford Edge has a lot more to offer. By comparison, the midsize Edge is bigger, stronger, and faster. Choose the Edge for extra interior space and a very savvy safety lineup.
