It’s easy to get caught between the 2022 Ford Edge and Chevy Equinox, two crossovers with a lot in common. Look closer, however, and you’ll see that one of these crossover SUVs is a better fit for your highway adventures.
Best Price: 2022 Chevy Equinox
Because the Chevy Equinox is a small crossover, it comes at a much more affordable rate than the midsize Ford Edge, starting at $25,800. The Edge, a midsize crossover, will force you to spend a little more, with an MSRP that starts at $36,145.
Comfort & Space: 2022 Ford Edge
The Edge is the roomier model, thanks to its status as a midsize crossover. Its extra space is especially noticeable in the cargo area, where the Edge provides 39.2 cubic feet of space for your stuff. Compared to the Equinox, the Edge gives you a few extra inches of front leg and shoulder room. The rear seats are also wider, with noticeably more shoulder room and a smidgen of extra legroom back there.
Inside the Equinox, you’ll find 29.9 cubic feet of cargo space. Although it’s not quite as spacious, the Equinox goes pound-for-pound with the Edge with its nicely padded seats and luxury options. You can add features like leather upholstery and heated seats to either model.
Tech Gear: 2022 Ford Edge
The Edge is also our choice for cutting-edge safety and tech gear. Ford’s popular midsize crossover comes standard with its new SYNC 4 infotainment system, which includes a huge, 12-inch touchscreen and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Thanks to features like blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist and forward collision mitigation, every Edge helps you get around safely.
When it comes to standard tech features, the Chevy Equinox is almost as fully loaded. For example, its infotainment system also includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. However, at 7 inches, its touchscreen isn’t quite as impressive. Although the Equinox doesn’t come standard with blind-spot monitoring, it does include lane-keeping assist and forward collision mitigation.
Sporty Power: 2022 Ford Edge
The Edge offers two powertrain options:
- 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine (250 horsepower, 280 lb-ft of torque) + eight-speed automatic transmission
- 2.7L turbo V6 (335 hp, 380 lb-ft) + seven-speed automatic transmission
The 250-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine is standard on most Edge models, along with sporty all-wheel drive. The performance-based Edge ST model features the turbo V6. This midsize crossover feels composed around curves and capable on a sandy trail. Properly equipped, the Edge can tow a trailer weighing up to 3,500 pounds.
The sporty Edge ST model features the quicker, turbocharged V6. And it also adds some coveted performance features, including a sport-tuned suspension and an optional ST Performance Brake package.
With the 2022 Chevy Equinox there’s only one available powertrain:
- 1.5L turbo four-cylinder engine (170 hp, 203 lb-ft) + six-speed automatic transmission
This smaller, less powerful crossover offers a little extra fuel mileage, earning up to 28 mpg combined (26 city/31 highway). However, compared to the Edge, it’s not as strong a performer. And it can’t tow quite as much, with max tow ratings of 1,500 pounds.

The 2022 Chevrolet Equinox is a smooth operator, but the 2022 Ford Edge gives you more of everything: interior space, power, and tech gear. Choose the Edge for an all-inclusive family hauler.
