The Rundown
Oftentimes from year to year, a car model will not change much. This is anything but the case for the transition from the 2022 Escape model year to the 2023 Escape. In 2022 the Escape had gone a little stale, contrary to its name, it was monotonous and another cookie cutter crossover. To make the Escape live up to its name, Ford redesigned the front end of the powerful crossover and gave it a facelift. Not only is the exterior redesigned to be more rugged and appealing, but the interior has gone through a similar redesign. Sitting in the brand new Escape is like a breath of fresh air, and a few interior updates make the driver’s cluster and dash fresh and modern. Ford did not stop at purely cosmetic changes but also made some changes to the trims of the Escape, cutting down on options and making the trim levels much more streamlined.
What are the main differences between the two model years?
Between the two, the prices start the same, the 2022 model year will now be slightly cheaper. The two model years start around $28,000 and top out at around $38,000 for the PHEV trim. Since both 2022 and 2023 Escape offer the same powerful engine options, the main difference becomes cosmetic and updating of technology. The 2023 Escape has larger infotainment screens with better software, with a more modern dash design. The 2022 model year can be a bit spartan in comparison, but other than that the comfort in the seats are the same. The 2023 has more rugged looks, which makes the car feel leaner and more athletic, even though the performance is exactly the same.
What are the trim changes, and does it mean anything for the Ford Escape?
Ford has gutted the 2022 trims, which included: S, SE, SEL, and Titanium. Hybrid and PHEV powertrains are available on trims SE and above. The new 2023 Escape trims are Base, Active, ST-Line, Platinum and PHEV. The previous trims mainly differed in engine power and creature comforts. The 2023 trims offer the same with the exception being the ST-line which offers sportier changes such as a spoiler, mesh grille, and lower molding that is the same as the body color. On the 2023 Escape we like the ST-line and Platinum trims for their upgraded engine with 250 horses and also their lightbar which improves the overall aesthetic. The new trims on the Ford Escape bodes well for Escape fans. Ford is investing in updating the crossover and fighting to make sure it remains competitive in the crossover market.
Is the 2023 model year better than the 2022 model year?
The answer to this question truly depends on what you want. For the next year you should be able to purchase either model year as a new car. They have the same engines and powertrains, same seats and body size. The main difference on the exterior is definitely cosmetic, and if you want a more rugged-looking vehicle then the 2023 Escape will be better for you. If that doesn't really matter to you and you want to save a little bit of money, then the 2022 model year would be better for you. The 2023 does pack a punch with larger, and more modern, infotainment screens, which is the biggest argument for needing to purchase the latest and greatest. Either way you purchase one of Ford’s frontrunning SUVs and get a great crossover.
Summary
The two Escapes are both great vehicles and offer a suite of options. Both model years will be reliable and safe, and you cannot go wrong by purchasing a Ford Escape.
